The Great Pig Escape of 2022
Early one morning our daughter Ruth stood looking out the kitchen window. I was at the sink washing the late night snack dishes. In a slow and rather confused voice Ruth said “is that a pig?!” I walked to the window and looked in the same direction. Not seeing what she was seeing I said “It is probably a bunny.” We have many rabbit families living in the bushes nearby. I was sure that it couldn’t be a pig. The area to which we were looking was a good 50 feet or more from the piggery. Bellatrix, our mamma pig, is not the most athletic of pigs so even if she were out she would not bother to go all that way.
“No”, said Ruth “that is definitely a pig!” as she sprinted out the door toward the flagpole. I, now finally seeing what Ruth saw, ran after her grabbing a bag of shredded cheese to coax Bellatrix into returning to the piggery. There Bellatrix was with her three little piglets romping about her! We spent the next 45 minutes cajoling Bellatrix slowly back up the gentle sloping incline to her home. Her piglets happily followed their mother. They all enjoyed every bit of shade, stopping to rest and nap along the way. Bellatrix and piglets are now happily back in their piggery with a repaired latch on the gate!
As far as Bellatrix wandered. Conference with the piglets. Come on piggies! Aren’t they cute!
Come on Bellatrix, keep up!!
